Gable House Bowl, a Torrance staple since the early 1960s, will make way this summer for a new mixed-use residential development, Intracorp Homes announced yesterday.

The site, located at 2230 West Sepulveda Boulevard, will be replaced with a six-story, 173-unit apartment complex. The project also includes a five-level parking garage and nearly 11,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.

Gable House had been a part of the city for more than five decades before its closing in May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After announcing the closure, the owners decided to put the site up for sale and partner with Intracorp, which is now developing another mixed-use residential project nearby on Sepulveda Boulevard.

The new development will include studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with an average size of 900 square feet. All of the units will have high ceilings and modern finishes. A variety of amenities are planned for residents including a rooftop deck, private balconies/patios, bike storage rooms and an outdoor courtyard area.

“This project is an integral part of our commitment to creating vibrant residential communities that foster inclusivity throughout Torrance and South Bay as a whole,” said Brad Jones, chief executive officer at Intracorp Homes. “We look forward to bringing much-needed residential housing to the area with this development and hope it can provide an active lifestyle for those living there.”

This summer, Torrance’s Gable House Bowl, a location beloved by the community for nearly 60 years, will make way for Intracorp Homes’ new The Gable House Apartments. The 3.8-acre mixed-use development at 22501 Hawthorne Boulevard will feature 218 studio, one-, and two-bedroom units – including 17 affordable units – as well as 12,000 square feet of ground-level commercial space. The project design is inspired by the postmodern gables of the existing bowling alley and will feature amenities such as a swimming pool, a fitness center, outdoor decks, and co-working space. Urban Arena has been hired to design the surroundings to create an atmosphere akin to that of a five-star resort.

Intracorp’s President Brad Perozzi expressed his excitement for the project in hopes that it would invigorate the neighborhood with first class architecture and amenities. Despite its high ambition, Intracorp secured Torrance Planning Commission approvals in August 2022. The construction on site is set to break ground in Summer 2023 and is expected to open for future residents in mid-2025. Owners Mikey Cogan and Mayor George K. Chen have given the project their blessings
